February 11, 2002 (Philadelphia, PA)- Don Brenner netted a pair of 2nd period goals and Rick Kreppel became the first Phantoms player of the season to score a hat trick en route to a 6-0 win over the Wharton Wildmen.

Despite the season long suspension of three players prior to the game, the Phantoms were able to regroup and shuffle personnel to fill the void. The defense played nothing short of spectacular with Stew Lee, Rob Tannen, Ray Church, and Steven Frind holding the Wildmen to just ten shots. Of the 10 shots that were allowed, most were from impossible angles or from far enough out not to be a threat. The defense kept everything to the outside and the forwards backchecked to mute any threat from forwards coming in late.

Brenner fired home the game winner early in the 2nd period on a feed from below the left circle to make the score 1-0. Rick Rico Kreppel made it 2-0 on a net mouth scramble opportunistically pouncing on a loose puck and snapping it past a fallen Wharton goaltender. Mark Weiss got the assist on Kreppels 2nd of the season. Weiss has turned out to be quite the playmaker, leading the team with 4 assists in the first two games.

Later in the 2nd period, Don Brenner got his tied-for-team-leading 4th of the season on a redirection of a redirection in the low slot. Ray Church got off an uncontested hard low shot that banked off of two Phantoms forwards on its way to the back of the net.

Rico sealed the deal in the third period with two more goals (3rd and 4th of the season) sandwiched around a pretty goal by defenseman Steven Frind. New goaltender Rob Coccagna turned away 10 shots and was sharp when called upon. Clearly a seasoned netminder, Coccagna was able to stop the few Wharton threats by smartly freezing the puck when needed.

While it is still early in the season, the Phantoms are looking good at 2-0-0. The teams performance defensively has exceeded even the loftiest of pre-season expectations. Undefeated, untied, and unscored upon. Thats a nice start even if it is only two games in.
